Surrogates
Enough people have been bringing up this to me, I suppose I should probably get around to posting about it. ;-)

Surrogates is an upcoming film starring Bruce Willis, based on a graphic novel that I haven't read. The basic premise is that there's this technology that allows people to insert their consciousness into a perfect android body while their real body is asleep (sort of like this RP). Making it kind of like a middle step between SecondLife and Virtual Reality.

From the sounds of it, I guess it's discovered that if a person's surrogate is destroyed, the human also dies. Making their system, I guess, The Matrix 1.0?

They've recently released an interesting-looking series of posters:

I know there are a few of you reading this right now who are thinking "wait, those look kind of familiar. Isn't this ripping off that Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles poster?"

I think it's understandable why you might think this, especially because of the similar-looking blocky font. But, no. In actuality, the poster is ripping of an entirely different photo-manip done by someone online:

Note how the model's hand in the Surrogates image is even positioned to look like she could be similarly pulling up a bunch of skin, but instead is just pulling at air.

What's even funnier is that the aforementioned T:SCC image is likewise ripped off from a photo-manip that was posted online:

It even uses the exact same body, with Summer Glau's head and hair Photoshopped in. There's the possibility that the artist who created the original also created the revised version, but I haven't been able to find any definitive info anywhere. It's too bad movie poster artists are never credited anywhere.

Interesting. Speaking as an artist (but not as a copyright lawyer, heaven's no); I'd say the similarity of the Surrogates-to-Other is more likely a case of parallel design than an intentional (or even accidental rip-off). The image of a bare-topped woman kneeling and covering her chest is a comparatively common 'model' pose. I suspect both artists ultimately decided to Photoshop out the midriffs for the same exact reason -- it's the simplest part of said design to manipulate. :-)

That said, you're right, it's obvious that the Terminator poster graphic is related to the Other one pictured. Some of the smaller details are such that it's clearly the same baseline image that was used for both, and I'd bet money that in fact the same artist did them. Firstly, I'd be a little surprised if a major studio actually decided to copy something they found on the internet that blatantly. Secondly, and more importantly IMHO, it's highly unlikely said studio artist would have found a version of the graphic online to 'rip off' that would have been of high-enough quality and definition to be used on a movie poster. So I suspect rather strongly that the artists are either one and the same, or otherwise connected in some official capacity somehow. :-)

Steve is right. Some of the details in the Sarah Conner image are not only similar to the other image, they are identicial. And the kind of resolution/quality needed for the posters is way beyond anything someone would copy from Internet. So the artist either recreated it with excruciating accuracy (highly unlikely) or had access to the original high resolution images and simply made enough changes to suit the needs of the studio ad dept (a lot more likely).

actually, the Surrogates image has the model pulling up her "mostly non-existant" black top to expose her tatoo, not "pulling at air"

What, is it wrong to stare at an android's torso? I'm just a white synthetic-lubricated male like anyone else.

Oh, interesting, didn't notice that before. Guess I should be paying a little more attention, heh.
