Barbie Love MAC
I'm surprised I'm beating Asudem to this, since she's the one who usually blogs about instances doll-ism or fetish making appearances in the fashion world.
Apparently MAC Cosmetics is trying to bring doll-ism to the mainstream with a new line of Barbie-inspired makeup. I spotted the above image on posters displayed outside while doing some shopping last weekend, and smiled, instantly thinking of Asudem, lol.
How this line will go over with mainstream culture however remains to be seen. In my case, it actually backfired (as amused as I was by the poster images). Before I'd spotted the images I was actually contemplating potentially experimenting with some makeup (I usually don't wear any -- I'm not someone who likes to spend all that much time every morning on their appearance), to see what they might suggest as far as a look or colors or whatever. Except that upon entering the store, I discovered that the theme continued...and all the employees were wearing identical pink glossy lipstick etc.! And as well as it works in the context of a poster with a model heavily airbrushed so as to look almost plastic, on real people it looked less than flattering. (In fact, they looked very much like Rachel in that episode of Friends where she let Ross put her makeup on for her...kind of stereotypically "hooker" look.) Or maybe they just weren't wearing the right clothes and/or didn't have the right hair to go with it, I don't know?
But unlike Asudem, who would be more than happy being permanently transformed into a human doll, the appeal of the whole doll look for me is rooted more in a context erotic humiliation, being so different from who I am and how I see myself in regular daily life (a strong and independent, largely tomboyish woman...then being tranformed into someone's pretty toy ;-))...and as a result, was more inclined to high-tail it out of there before anybody had a chance to ask if I was looking for anything. ;-P
But I suppose at least those of you with an interest in the doll-in-daily-life thing have an excuse to have a professional doll you up and to wear it out in public...at least, 'til the Spring season is over. ;-)
There are two websites for the line, if you want to read more (and/or see more of those two dolled-up models). One is the official Barbie Loves MAC website. The other is a subsection of the official MAC website, with a product description actually includes the line: "a limited edition colour collection specially created for all you living dolls."
